Working towards healthy communities, resilient livelihoods and a sustainable Himalayan environment since 1994.
Established in 1994, SPD is a Dehradun-based non-profit organization working at the intersection of community well-being, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental conservation.
SPD began its journey with a strong commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the Himalayan region. From the outset, we recognized the close and interdependent relationship between local communities and forests, particularly the longstanding dependence of rural and mountain communities on forests for their livelihoods and subsistence.
We therefore sought to promote approaches that reduce pressures on natural resources while strengthening the well-being, resilience, and self-reliance of communities.
SPD's journey has evolved through community experiences, partnerships and a continued commitment to sustainable development.
SPD began with a strong focus on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the Himalayan region.
Our experiences highlighted the challenges faced by rural communities and encouraged expansion into community-focused development.
SPD expanded its work into community health, health education, women's empowerment and drudgery reduction.
Livelihood development and sustainable use of natural resources became important components of SPD's development approach.
Over the years, SPD has grown through the dedication of committed professionals, social workers, community leaders, and partners who have translated our vision into meaningful action.
Our approach has consistently focused on participatory development, community ownership, self-reliance, and sustainable use of natural resources.
Today, SPD works towards the holistic and integrated development of the Himalayan region and its communities.
Our work is guided by a simple yet enduring belief: sustainable development is possible when people and the environment progress together.
Today, SPD is a dynamic organization working towards the holistic and integrated development of the Himalayan region and its communities.
Over more than three decades, we have successfully implemented a diverse range of programmes in areas including health and nutrition, natural resource and watershed management, sustainable agriculture, livelihood promotion, skill development, afforestation, biodiversity conservation, tourism promotion, education, women's empowerment, and community development.
Through partnerships, innovation, and community-led action, SPD continues to work towards a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable future for the people and ecosystems of the Himalayan region.
