Established in 1994, SPD began its journey with a commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the Himalayan region.
From the very beginning, we recognized that the well-being of mountain communities is closely connected with the health of forests, water, land and other natural resources on which communities depend.
Our experience over the years has reinforced our belief that development can be sustainable only when communities are active participants in shaping their own future. We therefore continue to promote community ownership, self-reliance, sustainable livelihoods and responsible management of natural resources.
SPD's work has expanded across health and nutrition, livelihoods, agriculture, women’s empowerment, education, watershed management, biodiversity conservation, tourism promotion and community development.
We remain committed to working alongside communities and partners to create a more equitable, resilient and sustainable future for the Himalayan region.
Our vision continues to be rooted in people, participation and the sustainable use of Himalayan natural resources.
